An Oasis of Green

The Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area was formally classified as a National Park in 2000, receiving in the process the new name of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

The Park is approximately 33,000 acres, of which approximately 27,000 is available to the public. There are no park entrance fees as in most National Parks and there are no public overnight camping areas (unfortunately). There are approximately 6,000 acres of publicly owned land within the Park and communities such as Peninsula exist within the Park boundaries.

In my opinion, the Park is one of Northeast Ohio's most under-appreciated resources (along with Lake Erie). Surprisingly, the Park is the second most utilized National Park in the U.S., behind only Yellowstone. I think part of this is due to the fact that many people live within the Park boundaries and commute to work via Park roads, thus artificially increasing Park numbers; however, that is only my musing.

The Cuyahoga Valley National Park is an island of green separating the two cities of Cleveland and Akron. Eventually, I believe Cleveland and Akron will become one large mega-city like Dallas Ft. Worth. When that happens, the Park will be a recreational mecca for those in the area to escape the dizzying effects of urban sprawl.

The Park is beautiful and worthy of exploration. It is my goal in this page to bring the beauty and diversity of this not so widely known National Park to you. I will be describing trails and sites as I hike and visit them. Hopefully, you will be able to visit some of them also.

Pros and Cons
