Nobody can consider themselves a seasoned traveller before they have managed to see their country, their own hometown, with the eyes of a tourist. Christopher Mamo
My hometown, Zabbar, is one of the largest cities in Malta (some statistics say it's fifth in terms of population). Unfortunately, it is often overlooked by visitors. Although largely residential, there may be delights in Zabbar that you will simply not find anywhere else.
The devotion to Our Lady of Graces, revered at Zabbar, is centuries-old, and impressive related works of art may be found in the City Museum.
The best time to visit Zabbar is, though, during the second week of September, when the locals (taken in the broader context, including those from Zabbar but that do not live there any longer) meet up for the annual festival, known as the festa, for brilliant displays of fireworks, traditional foods and for getting into touch with our real selves (culturally) for a few days, before sinking again into the usual day-to-day routine for another year.
