Maid of Athens, 'ere we part, Give, oh me back my heart Lord Byron
Athens... So many words have been said about Athens that I guess I'm seriously running the risk of falling into cliches.
The birthplace of democracy - the concrete jungle - the Olympians' playground. All has been said, I fear. A thousand other cities have been rebaptised 'Athens' - Athens of the East, Athens of the South, Athens of the New World...
All this proves that Athens really is the one city in history that has achieved what none else could - fame through everlasting glory. Rome was glorious, but the Empire fell. Egypt saw its glory, but its gods are forgotten. The Inca sure were advanced, but they eventually abandoned their cities.
Athens no. Democracy, drama and theater, half the modern scientific (and not only) language, the Olympic Games, Zeus & Company... Athens is now; It's today...
