For the great desire I had to see fair Padua, nursery of arts, I am arrived… and am to Padua come, as he that leaves a shallow plash to plunge in the deep, and with satiety seeks to quench his thirst. William Shakespeare (The Taming of the Shrew)
Padua is a city in the northern Italian region of the Veneto. Padua stands on the Bacchiglione River and on the Brenta river (which once passed through the city), which still touches northern districts, which are situated 40 km west of Venice and 29km southeast of Vicenza. Its agricultural setting is the Pianura Veneta, the "Venetian Plain". To the city's south west lie the Euganaean Hills, praised among others (and apart from the modern-day tourist) by Lucan and Martial, Petrarch, Ugo Foscolo, and Shelley.
The city is picturesque, with a dense network of arcaded streets opening into large communal piazze, and many bridges crossing the various branches of the Bacchiglione, which once surrounded the ancient walls like a moat.
The most obvious symbols of Padova, however, are the 'Prato della Valle' square, the Basilica of Saint Anthony, and the Scrovegni Chapel.
