When it came time to whisk my Mum off on her first overseas trip, I wanted somewhere not too far from home, cheap and something totally different from where we live in Perth even though I was desperate to return to China and knew Mum wouldn't be keen on the idea. Then it hit me, why not hit the outskirts of China and get the best of both worlds - and so it came to pass that Hong Kong was the chosen destination.
Hong Kong was fantastic - a thought we both shared. Mum was less culture shocked that I had anticpated which was great and as well as quite a few organised tours, we got ourselves out and about a lot of the time. We found it really easy to get around, despite our first impressions of road after road looping back and around on itself.
We visited the Peak, Aberdeen, Ocean Park, the Temple Street Night Markets, the Ladies Markets, Pacific Place, Stanley Market, the Wishing Tree, the Lo Wai Walled Village, the Tang Chung Ling Ancestoral Hall, Jardine's Crescent, the Symphony of Lights, the New Territories, saw the Flag Raising Ceremony at the Golden Bauhinia, did an Aberdeen Harbour Cruise, ate at the Jumbo Floating Restaurant and took a day trip to Macau - amongst other things.
We stayed in the Wanchai district (former red light district from the days of Suzy Wong) and really enjoyed the location. We had everything we needed all around us - great selection of restaurants and 7-11s, MTR station, tramways, shopping complexes and the ferry pier.
I would love to go back to Hong Kong. It was so vibrant and exciting.
My only regret is not trying some of the local food - but after all the walking around we did I wasn't going to argue if Mum wanted steak for dinner!
- Pros:Yes, lots of them in Wanchai! HA HA. Vibe, Culture, History
- Cons:Smog, spitting

You've got to do it. It's a really cheap and quick way to cross between Hong Island and Kowloon. more travel advice
