We came to Cairns to see the Great Barrier Reef. I think thats why most people come. The city itself is nothing special, but the surroundings are. Our tour of the GBR was unbelievable. We saw sparkling colors, vibrant fish and even above ground coral! We bought an underwater case for our camera for this trip and that made all the difference. The whole world beneath the sea just came alive.
The rainforest -- an old forest full of fascinating creatures and vegetation. Located about 2 hours north of Cairns. We took a day tour of the fascinating area. I dont even know how to describe it!
Sometimes a neglected area, the Atherton Tablelands boast beautiful landscape and the culture of Paronella Park. The Tablelands are just south of Cairns.

Agree with you about Cairns itself, but isn't it beautiful elsewhere. We also used "Quicksilver" and had a fantastic days outing.
