"sun, mountains..." Garmisch-Partenkirchen by iaint

Garmisch-Partenkirchen Travel Guide: 285 reviews and 1,066 photos

the place

GP is best known as a winter sports resort. It hosted the 1936 Winter Olympics and bid for the 2018 event. It is also a centre for all kinds of outdoor sports in summer and winter.

The setting is wonderful, with the Bavarian Alps all around, including Germany’s highest peak - Zugspitze at 2,962m (9,718 ft). I’m told you can take a cablecar to the top - must be spectacular.

And not many places have a ski jump in the middle of town.

the visit

Our visit was short. We arrived about 8am and were on our way home by 5.30. In between we hiked from Elmau (south of town on the Innsbruck road) up to the top of the Schachen at 1,870m.

the future

So, apart from the hike we didn’t see much. Next time.

Maybe another hike/climb. Maybe for a winter sports event.

Back again in summer 12 & 14. More tips being added.
