First visit

August 1974. I was working in Westhampton Beach at the east end of Long Island and on a day off we went off to see the Big Apple.

We did a few tourist things for the day, then back to work!

Last visit

October 2010 , on my way to the VT meet in Fred, VA.

I stayed in an airport hotel in Queens, next to JFK. Part of the City of course, but well out of Manhattan.

The only time I was in the City proper was taking the LIRR from Jamaica to PennStation to catch a train to DC. Didn't get above ground in Manhattan!

It reminded me how little tourist stuff I've done there. I've never been to the Statue of Liberty or up the Empire State Building. Maybe just familiarity breeding contempt?

Anyway, I'm more likely to want to hang out in a good coffee shop in SoHo or visit a gallery, than be the normal touroid.

in between - some memories

- taking the wrong exit from the freeway and ending up in the South Bronx (scary)
- the view from a certain point on the LIE heading into the city (you come over a bridge and see the Manhattan skyline in all its glory)
- lunch in a Haitian restaurant (I was the only white face)
- a motorcycle policeman putting my 2.5 year old son on his Harley Davidson outside Macy's
- walking from the Appelate Division court in Brooklyn to the station, taking the wrong turning and getting very scared
