"Another home from home?" Findhorn by iaint

This is where I spent my summer holidays until I was about 15. My father was from Forres, 5 miles inland. My grandmother lived in Forres, and she had a cottage in Findhorn. That was where we stayed (usually) when in Findhorn.
One of my uncles & aunts lived in the village, and my 2 cousins were great company when we came on holiday. Another uncle and aunt had a holiday home there too.
It was a very safe environment for kids on holiday, so long as we did not drown ourselves on one of our many adventures on the water.
It is historic. 1189 is claimed as the foundation year!
Centuries ago the village was located on the west side of the bay. The sand dunes there (now covered in turn by a pine forest) overwhelmed it in the 1600s. Floods destroyed the replacement in 1701, and they relocated to the east side.
It was a small working harbour for a long time, for coal and other heavy loads. In the 50s and 60s that was gone, but it had a thriving salmon fishery. That has now gone. Water sports grew in popularity in the 60s and 70s, and now that is a big part of village activity in the summer.
Being so close to the RAF bases at Lossiemoth and Kinloss, service activity is another big thing.
Last and not least, the Findhorn Foundation. More information on that via my "things to do" tip.
I manage to go back occasionally, whenever I can.
I love the surrounding country. Two of my cousins now live there again, and another has a 2nd home there.
Its more developed than it was (housing that is) but its charm remains.
- Pros:the sea, the climate, the charm
- Cons:too far from here!
- In a nutshell:many happy memories; hopefully more to come
