It certainly is a golfers' paradise, at least in the good weather months. I'll need to check how many courses are in/around the town, but I'd guess at least 6.

It's the Old Course which is famous, of course. I plan to do a golf tip, so I won't write too much more here.

St Salvator's

It is also famous as a university town. The oldest in Scotland, and the smallest.

To the celebrity addicts, it's where Prince William met Kate Middleton. In some ways that sums the place up quite well. In Scotland it is seen as university dominated by expensively educated kids (often English) who couldn't get into Oxford or Cambridge.

I've no idea how accurate that is. It wasn't on my list of applications. My knowledge is limited to cold, windy, winter Wednesdays knocking lumps out of their rugby team.

It does attract a lot of foreign students too, and I know the terrorism studies courses are well regarded.

The town also has huge religious significance in Scottish history. Religion is not one of my hot subjects. Neither is history from that period.

Can I suggest Wikipedia, or a good guide book?

It has great beaches.

Try to visit during the university term time - October to June (inc), but excluding Christmas & Easter vacations. The students create a buzz about the place which the golfers & tourists can't match.

I have a lot of tips on my Kirkcaldy page which will also be useful to a St Andrews visitor. Some are closer to St Andrews than Kirkcaldy, but because I live in the latter I see them as things to do from there rather than St Andrews.
