  • I used to appreciate budget chains like this – you know what to expect – no frills but clean, basic affordable rooms. Now I’m disenchanted. At least in some cities they seem to be full of drunks – stag nights, hen nights or just drunks without an excuse. As we checked in here (tired after a 2.5 hour drive) we had to queue behind 8 little teenybopper girls all buying 2 Bacardi Breezers each (total €5 each), all individually paying by credit card. We waited about 10 minutes to check in!

The room was only different from usual in that the sink did not drain (found that out when brushing teeth, so a bit late to get it sorted) and the water temperature control on the shower was broken (discovered that at 7am, so again tricky to get fixed).

It was quiet, and we did sleep well. It was convenient for us (arriving by road from Limerick and leaving for the airport in the morning) so in some ways it worked out OK. €89 for the room for 2, breakfast excluded.

Breakfast arrangements are grim as well - see my resto tip on Metzo Diner.

  • Best place I’ve stayed for years. It is a genuine castle converted into a high quality hotel, done stylishly and in great taste throughout.

Rooms good sized and very comfortable. Only €125 per night for the room for 2, during the week. An absolute bargain. Breakfast was not included and it was pricey (€38 for 2) but it was excellent.

Public areas are wonderful too. We had lunch in the lounge one day, and dinner in the restaurant another (see eating tips), so the food is top rate all round. Staff are friendly and helpful.

Its 3km from the city centre, but €1.50 on the bus gets you there in no time. Its also very handy (15 minutes drive) for the airport.

Unique Qualities: Well, its a castle!
