so, 9am on a Saturday morning in December is about the best time to miss the crowds! it was my 2nd visit, and its still awe inspiring ticket was €11 each for adults, but that gets you into Palatino + Mostra as well

Our first morning was sunny and beautiful - December, so not warm. We walked from the Colosseum to St Peters, taking back streets and along the river as much as possible. Just great, and the perfect way to prepare for pizza and beer at lunchtime!

Comprises 2 buildings opposite each other on the piazza, linked by a tunnel. You buy your ticket at the Palazzo dei Conservatori, and finish up at the Palazzo Nuovo. Many objects worth seeing, from sculpture and paintings (Tintoretto, Carvaggio, Rubens etc) through to tapestries. €8 per adult for admission (Dec 07), but I think its a bit less if no special events on - we saw an exhibition of photos by Herbert List.

The Piazza is worth seeing for itself, even if you skip the museums. It was built to Michaelangelo's design, finished in 1655.

Spanish steps definitely overcrowded and over-rated. You feel you ought to go, and then when you get there, wonder why you bothered! Thats said after 2 visits, 5 years apart. 2nd time around, got more fun out of walking round the chic shops in Via Condotti etc and watching the locals "posing" with their designer shopping bags

One of the few things I reckon it helps to have a guided tour of. It really gets the information across. Too much to describe properly here - buy a good guide book and swot up. You do get a palpable sense of treading in the footsteps of the Romans (famous or not) as yo wander round. Like everything else, it can be busy. Early morning in December seems to be best!
