Vietnam was just opening up a bit when I went in early 92. It was still a hassle getting in, and even more hassle getting out. Definitely worth the effort.

some memories

Getting picked up at airport by tour guide in 1970s American gas guzzler.
Power cuts (always when I was in shower).
Little kids grabbing empty beer cans off table (to sell for aluminium).
Hanoi Conservatoire playing in restaurant at the Continental Hotel (I was only diner).
Dinner on roof of Rex.
Silent rush hours (no cars or motor bikes, only cycles).
Doctors working as cyclo drivers.
Being asked if I'm Vietnamese (Iain is pronounced the same as Nguyen!)

and...

I'd love to go back, but i'm scared it will have been spoiled...
