a good 9 months Got posted to Toulouse in September 1972 to work in a secondary school, teaching kids to speak English. They got to learn English with a Scottish accent. I got to learn French with a Toulouse accent. Lived just across the Garonne from the city centre. Work was not too tough - part time really, but a full time salary. |
diversions Played 2nd division rugby for one of the city teams. Missed a lot of time with a back injury, then broke my wrist in last game of the season. Had some good times though, and rugby took me to a lot of places "off the beaten track". Castelsarrasin downriver (towards Agen). Carcassonne for my first league game. Foix in the Pyrenees foothills. Mazamet, Mussidan, St Girons, Lombez, Prades... |

highs The food - nearly always top class. Wine as well. School lunches were 5 course meals with wine (better than a restaurant in UK) and you got a 2 hour break so you could have a siesta. Weather was great (even in winter - not warm, but not horrible). So many places to see in the area. The rugby - fast, hard + skilfull. |
