"A green city with three very good museums." Madrid by breughel

There is so much to write about Madrid that I don't know where to start!
Shall I just say that my country belonged to the Spanish monarchy; "our" Charles Quint, "their" Carlos I, was born in Gent, Belgium and went over to Spain accompanied by a number of Flemish noblemen and painters. It's no surprise to find in their museums so many works of art from my country.
My best rated museums are:
Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza.
Museo Nacional Del Prado.
Museo Naval de Madrid.
I visited some others and was not enthusiast enough to write anything about them; that's especially true for the Reina Sofia.
I have been four times to Madrid; it is a fact that I like the Castilian ambiance more than any other.
Maybe there is also that frantic period of San Isidro with bullfights each day, over several weeks, at the Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas.
At noon time I like to sit on a terrace near the lake of the Retiro park, eating some bocadillo (Spanish sandwich) and refreshing me with a cerveza.
Madrid is said to be the city with most trees in the world, about 500.000.

Hi Eddy~ Tom and I made a quick weekend trip to Madrid last weekend (we plan to go back for more). I got to the Prado, Thyssen, and the Renia Sophia (only to see Picasso's "Guernica"). I had a rather long list to visit in both the Prado and the Thyssen and was able to see everything on my list! Like you, I'm not a fan of much of the Spanish works, although I do like Velazquez. And Tom was very excited to see the Bosch works. Other than the musuems, we did a walking tour and two very wonderful local lunches with Santi (VTer redang). Great weekend! ~Brenda
Thank you for rating my tips. We have been there several times and always liked, more than Barcelona actually. But winter can be cold and summer too warm. Spring is best.
It was not the best weekend weather-wise - cold, rainy at times, and windy. But since we were inside a good bit of the time, I didn't let it bother me too much. We only had a long weekend, so we need to go back for a longer visit. Tom had spied the Naval Museum and your tip makes it sound like a definite must-see!
Some great updates, esp the Museums. Not keen about the bullfights though. It's such a brutal sport.
Great Madrid page breughel! Love the Thyssen, I wonder if they'll have Canaletto at the Architectural Paintings exhibit? Good straightforward info about bullfights, tks for writing about this custom -- & for warnings that it can be tough to watch!
I'm a fan of naval museums too. Missed the one in Madrid - a pity as the country has such a great maritime history. Next time ... rather that than a bullfight any day! leyle
Always a joy to read your pages. 5 Star tips all over! Great to witness that there are soooo may trees in this amazing city. Thanx for sharing.
I don't think there is any such thing as a "good" bullfight! I thought it was one of the most horrible things I have ever witnessed.
It's always interesting and informative to read your assessments of a city's museums.
Thanks for your comment on my Madrid page! Unfortunately I missed Museo Naval, sounds interesting!
