Pleasant and picturesque - Agréable et pittoresque

San Vicente de la Barquera is a pleasant and picturesque place of the coast of Cantabria, with its beaches, its old village and fishing port with in the background, the the summits of Picos de Europa.
The town is dominated by the hill with the church Santa María de los Angeles, the castle and the rests of a rampart. The Castle of San Vicente is one of the best examples of defensive architecture of the region. It was constructed in the year 1210.
The bridge of Maza is another remarkable monument. The city has several beautiful beaches as well as a nice "ria" with boats in bright colours.
San Vicente de la Barquera is renowned for its gastronomy, which offers excellent fishes and seafood.
We went there twice at noon time (i.e. 2 pm according to the Spanish traditions of late meals).

Lovely little page about this Spanish gem. I am hoping to visit San Vicente de la Barquera at the beginning of May.

This does look like a pleasant and picturesque place in a part of Spain that I have not visited up to now.

A very charming place with the fishing boats and seafood restaurants. I esp. like the architecture of the Santa Maria de los Angeles. Too bad about the smoking in the restaurant. We have for quite a while no smoking in public places, even at the Casino.
