"MY FLIGHT FROM THE PRISONS OF VENICE." To write an INTRO on Venice seems to me a vain attempt while everything was already written on Venice, throughout centuries, by the best authors. I prefer to read again the fascinating memories of a true Venetian, Giacomo Casanova:
"I discovered that a man imprisoned by himself can have no occupations. Alone in a gloomy cell where he only sees the fellow who brings his food once a day, where he cannot walk upright, he is the most wretched of men. He would like to be in hell, if he believes in it, for the sake of the company." "Story of My Flight from the prisons of the Venetian Republic." (1787)
The book was written in French, which was the dominant language in the upper class at the time; it is a real thriller.
The prison from the Palazzo Ducale can be visited with the normal non guided tour. The roof cells of the Piombi (lead) where Casanova was imprisoned until he escaped through the roof can only be visited with the "secret itinerary" guided tour.
