My Mexico City experience... a guide for us gueras

by Krissssss - last update: Apr 5, 2007

Safer than you'd think

No problem taking the metro!
Well before I went to Mexico City I heard a lot of bad things (some crazy examples on my main page). But let me tell you, it was not as bad as I thought. Its just a matter of knowing how to behave... just like in Rome. I stuck out... a lot. This because I am tall, slim, fair-skinned and blonde. The average person in Mexico City (now I'm not saying EVERYBODY... but the average...) is the exact opposite. So yeah, I felt quite exotic. Unusual feeling.

Well I did get a lot of attention. But I was prepared for it. And let me tell you, it was a lot more harmless than the attention I got in Rome. (I did live in one of the safest areas in the city, Colonia Condesa. I love that area. Its got lots of great restaurants and a couple of nice parks.) Let me be honest. The guys in Rome are very persistent. They will shower you with compliments, follow you, grope you, be blatantly honest about wanting to take you home with them. In Rome, they think you will sleep with them just because you're blonde. In Mexico I felt more like a circus freak. I was groped twice in 2 months, once was on the metro and once was in the city centre in the evening. Most often I would just get stares. The occasional 'guera' or 'sexy' or something. But it was fine. The beggars and peddlers were more annoying.

Mexico City is not the dangerous city you'd think. Like any other city you have to look confident and like you know where you're going and you'll be fine. It worked for me in Rome (walking around alone at 2-3 in the morning) and it worked for me there. Look confident but alert (even when you're drunk) and people WILL leave you alone.

Well, I'll put more in when I have time.
