Something I consider a good tip to avoid getting pick-pocketed is: Avoid looking like a tourist.
Here are some pointers:
Don't clench your handbags so tight you look like you are hanging off a cliff.
Avoid the tourist uniform of khakis, sneakers and a t-shirt.
Props like "hidden" wallets don't work. All it does is make you stand out like a tourist. If they want your money, they'll get it. No matter if its in a nice handbag or a hidden money belt.
DO keep your handbag close to your body when in a public place. Don't clench it, but position it so that noone can put their hand into it without you noticing it.
Don't unfold your map or look completely lost. Check before you leave the building or just improvise.
And, by all means, no black handbags in summer!
To sum it all up, don't look like you are carrying your weight in diamonds, look like you're carrying a bottle of water and a couple of metro tickets (which you should be).
I am tall and blonde, I do not look Italian at all, but had no problems with pick-pockets or gypsies for my one-month-stay in Rome, following these guidelines.
