Reflections on my upcoming journey Going to Mexico City on October 21st! Woo woo!
Never been to any Spanish-speaking countries, so this'll be interesting. Going there to improve my vast (okay tiny) knowledge of the Spanish language. Staying for quite a while too... 3 months! Its dangerous, I'll be telling store clerks that "I'm not a tourist, I'm from here, I know its not that expensive!" when I get home.
I asked a friend of mine (he is slightly taller than me) if, when he was at clubs in Mexico, he could literally look over all the heads. He could. Easily. Damn, I will miss my high heels!
How come when I ask for tanning salons everybody starts recommending beaches? I thought this was virtualtourist.com not virtualdoctor.com or virtualparent.com. I just needed to point that out... AAAAAAH!
Had my first vaccines today. "Where are you going in Mexico? What are you doing there for so long? Will you be working? Are you going to stay in that area or will you go other places?" Me: "If I do go somewhere, it'll only be the beach, I'm not planning to go into any jungles." Reliefed sigh from doctor. Reliefed sigh from me, looking at the prices of the vaccines. (Damn, those are expensive!)
What to wear. I've been looking at sites all over the internet for temperatures and customs, what I should and shouldn't wear. I've also asked most of my Mexican friends. Conclusion is, if you're a woman going to Mexico, especially if you are blonde, dress like a grey mouse. I hate grey mouse dressing! I need to find a way around it. The funniest thing I read was probably in a Lonely Planet book. "Wearing a bra will spare you a lot of unwanted attention." WTF???
My Mexican friends have never taken the metro. Ever. So that is something I'll be exploring on their behalf. I can't really understand it, but I've never taken the world's cheapest metro before. I take the world's most expensive one all the time though.
The only person I know who's a female that has taken the metro is a crazy friend of mine. She went to Russia alone and took another trip to Kyrgyzstan with a Polish friend. Just exploring around those countries. I hope to discover that the metro is not one of her wild adventure things. |
My friends thoughts on my upcoming journey Miguel (Mexican friend): Out of all the Spanish-speaking countries, why did you choose Mexico? And why Mexico City?
Florian (Austrian friend): They'll kidnap your ass!
Laila (crazy Norwegian friend): You'll have a lot of fun over there!
Maria (Mexican friend): I can pick you up from the airport. (She's just 18 and I'm landing VERY late...)
Tanya (Mexican friend): My parents can pick you up from the airport. My parents can take you around the city. You can call my mom anytime if you have any problems. (Tanya is currently in the US)
Mette (older Norwegian colleague): My friends daughter lived in Mexico for a year. She dyed her hair black.
Bjørg (older Norwegian colleague): I'm glad I'm not your mother now.
Female vaccination doctor: And you're going to Mexico City. You, who's so light-skinned and blonde |
