The first thing you'll learn about Auckland is that it is NZ's biggest city, hosting 1/4 of the Country population. You'll get prepared to visit a huge metropolis full of skyscrapers and stressed people... I beg you'll be completely disappointed! Auckland is a huge city indeed, but try and look at it from the Sky Tower (the tallest tower of the Souther hemisphere): you'll see only a few tall buildings in the very city centre, and an esplanade of tiny little wooden houses built on the 50 inactive volcanoes spread in the area. Instead of storing flats and offices in tall buildings, Auckland expanded in width becoming a green and well organised city with an excellent quality of life. The atmosphere is very relaxed, even at rush hour. If coming from abroad, Auckland is likely to be your first stop in NZ, the place where you'll try to get used to the new time zone. Take your time to relax, stroll around, do some shopping, and don't forget to either do some SkyWalk or SkyJump before you leave! |
