How does one describe a place like Manaus ?
A city of two million in the middle of the rain forest ... this city was, in the early 1900s, one of the richest cities in the world. Take a walk in downtown Manaus and you will be convinced. Even now, it is in the middle of a resurgance ... companies setting up fabrication and manufacturing units to take advantage of tax benefits.
The biggest of attraction of Manaus is the rainforest itself. How can one stay in a city when the Amazon beckons ? I spent 3 months in Manaus ... and enjoyed every single minute of it ... from the open-air forro parties to the airconditioned comfort of Le Gens ... from the spicy tacaca to the delicious tambaqui ... from floating in a pool to swimming in the amazon river .... from walking the streets to hiking in the rain forest ... from sipping the chopp to chugging the cachaca .....
If you like to immerse yourself in new cultures, then Manaus will not dissappoint ... I guarantee it ! |
| | Manaus has people of different ethnicities and backgrounds ... not only from Brazil, but also from other parts of the world ... mostly Europe and Asia. The Manauras, who have lived here for generations, are very friendly and nice to tourists. Many come from the east coast (Rio and SP) to take advantage of the booming electronics and eco-tourism industries.
In true Brazilian style, there is no shortage of good places to eat, drink and make merry. The Churrascharias and Peixarias are a gastronomical feast. And nothing can beat a weekend of hanging out with your Brazilian friends. |
