Just about 2 hours from Quito, Mindo was a wonderful getaway! Considered a cloud forest, it is tropical withouth being oppresive.
It's quiet if you'd prefer, but with plenty of outdoor actvitiies (hiking, birding, tubing on the river). We enjoyed our short detour here, lounging by the pool and taking some short hikes around the resort. Again, you'll find more locals than tourists.
Be warned! The road to Mindo IS very twisty and windy. Our friends drove a little faster than we would have (I have a strict don't-squeal-the-tires-on-a-road-with-a-sheer-drop-off policy. I'm funny that way!). They laughed every time we gasped!
