October walking holiday

We booked a week's holiday on Paxos in October, in a self-catering apartment. It was on offer through Voyage Prive, and was organised by Ionian Island Holidays.
We wanted somewhere quiet and picturesque, warm but not too hot, ideal for walking, and that's what we got. This small island is beautiful and compact enough to walk to just about anywhere. We are usually lucky with our holiday weather and this trip was no exception; the temperature was in the low to mid 20's every day, with plenty of sunshine. We were able to walk in the mornings, have lunch and spend a couple of hours in the afternoon ( the warmest part of the day, around 2 till 4 pm ) by the very nice pool attached to the Margarita apartments. There were only three couples, including ourselves, in the seven apartments, so some afternoons we were on our own by the pool and it was like having our own villa.
There are only three main villages on Paxos. Gaios, the largest, is where the ferry docks, and has the most going on. Although, having said that, it is still pretty small. Lakka and Loggos ( or Longos ) are the smaller, very picturesque coastal villages. The people are very friendly and there are numerous tavernas for eating out and supermarket/mini markets for self-catering supplies.

A few things to consider

As always, life is about compromise. We wanted somewhere warm enough to go walking in October, and that was perfect. A few drawbacks, however, to going there at this time of year are :-

There are fewer ferries from Corfu to Paxos - we had a four and a half hour wait, when we had to amuse ourselves in Corfu town, followed by a two and a half hour ferry crossing, so it was dark by the time we docked in Gaios.

The accommodation is undoubtedly cool and shady in the height of summer, but in October when it goes dark at 7pm ( they are 2 hrs in front of the UK ) and the evenings are long and cool, it can seem a bit gloomy.

Many of the tavernas are on the point of closing or already closed, but there are still a few very good ones open, such as Baoidns on the front at Loggos. ( If you eat outside there at lunchtime, you may have to move your seat when the bus has to squeeze between the front of the taverna and the edge of the harbour ) But unless you are actually staying in one of the three main villages, you will probably have to travel by car when going out to eat.

It was, however, an excellent holiday and we will go back, but possibly try late May or early June next time.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Beautiful island, good weather, friendly people.
  • Cons:Can be a bit too quiet out of season.
  • In a nutshell:A lovely island which we will definitely visit again.
