Nevada's State Capital

For many years, Carson City was the answer to a trivia question: What is the Smallest State Capital in the United States? But with a population edging towards 60,000, it can no longer make that claim. House prices are skyrocketing, with Carson City being "discovered" by California transplants. The city and hillsides are covered with strip malls and big box stores. The traffic on Carson Street can be horrendous at times. Carson City is no longer the idyllic small town it used to be. (By the way, the answer to that question is now Montpelier, Vermont.)

Still, Carson City holds a great deal of charm and is a worthy destination or side trip from Reno or Lake Tahoe. Carson City sits at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains, in Eagle Valley. To the north, south and east, the city is ringed by desert hillsides. On many days the air is crystal clear and the sky an endless blue.

There is a good deal of history in Carson City. It's been the capital of Nevada since 1864, and you can find traces of it's early history scattered around the downtown core, and in the western part of town. The Virginia and Truckee Railroad ran through town until 1950. There currently are plans to rebuilt the rail line between Carson City and Virginia City. It is scheduled to begin running steam trains on the tracks in 2009. When that happens, Carson City will become a major tourist destination. The Smallest State Capital image will be shed for good.
