Poppies & Olive Trees

by 36waterfalls - last update: Jun 9, 2009

My Andalucía Diary

Curious for the Moorish heritage that lies spread out over the South of Spain I decided to explore this part of
the country that's right behind the famous touristic Costas.
What I found was way beyond my imagination: fields full of poppies, hills covered in olive trees, white villages against mountain slopes, birds of prey circling the clear blue sky and the friendliest of people inhabiting this part of Spain.
And oh...that delious fresh food...
Since I spent most of this journey on foot (slow paced, climbing mountains) I'll share my experience
diary-style. Come walk with me (and my 9 hiking-buddies)!

"South from Granada" by Gerald Brenan, tells the story of village life in Las Alpujarras. Very detailed, gives a great insight in life in this remote part of Spain.

"Driving over lemons" by Chris Stewart, ex-Genesis drummer who moved to Andalucia to start a new life...this is his account of living in Las Alpujarras.

"The constant princess" by Philippa Gregory, gives a fairytale description of daily life at Granada's Alhambra, seen through the eyes of Catalina, daughter of Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabelle of Spain, who later becomes Katherine, 1st wife of Tudor king Henry XIII of England.

What an adventure you had in Andalucia! I loved your hiking tips, even if the Poqueira Gorge hike made me wince in pain! My wife & I spent 3 weeks over Christmas in Andalusia and loved every minute. Excellent tip on the laying of cobblestones too!

Yes, I'm sure those waterfalls must have cheered you up on the second half of that long hot hike! I like your insightful narratives of your trip. My only visit to Andalucía up to now was a bicycle tour in the winter of . . . 1963.
