Netherlands' Spring Garden Keukenhof is a huge garden in Lisse, designed in 1857 near Castle Teylingen, once home to Jacoba Van Beieren, Countess of Holland, Zeeland and Henegouwen: 1417-1433. The original garden she knew, used to be a herbgarden, supplying ingredients for the Castle's kitchen ('keuken'). Hence the name Keuken-hof. In 1857 landscape architect Zocher designed the new garden around the castle, by then known as Castle Keukenhof.
In 1949 the bulbgrowers in the area took the initiative to hold an exhibition of the flowers they grew each season. This turned out such a succes, that ever since the 'show' comes back every Springtime here in Lisse, the Heart of the Bulbfields. . . . |
| | Keukenhof consists of a huge garden, filled with all sorts of flowers, a lake to stroll around, some pavillions to relax, special indoors exhibits that change every few weeks and a lot of typical Dutch Souvenirs! The park only opens during Bulb-Season, which is from half March to half May each year. The amount of flowers in bloom of course relies on Mother Nature, since all depends on the weather. This year I visited late in the season, after we had four dry and very warm weeks here in The Netherlands. A lot of perks were empty already, but there still was a lot to enjoy!

Pinat Sat Sep 19, 2009 10:24 UTC It is a pity that I'll be in your country for the second time but I keep coming in December. I should definitely revisit in spring time. Lovely pics! | csordila Tue May 19, 2009 18:46 UTC I spent a lot of time in the area, working for a friend of mine in Noordwijkerhout. Thanks for your nice comment, I really appreciate.... Best. Laszlo | Nemorino Sat Dec 15, 2007 20:57 UTC "Crawl Into The Flower!" -- I'll have to remember that next time I try to take pictures of flowers. You've got some really fine flower photos here in your tips and travelogues. | nickandchris Mon Nov 19, 2007 17:13 UTC This must be such a beautiful sight in full bloom. Would love to see it. Shame VT doesn't have a "garden" section. |
