The fortress of Naarden dates back to the 13th century and is one of the few fortified cities left in The Netherlands. It used to be an important passage on route from Utrecht to Amsterdam and fortifications became necessary to protect trade. The city has a double wall and double canals and both walls make for a good walk. The whole inner wall walk takes about 2 hours. The outer wall is also accessible to cars. The city within the walls is home to around 1300 people, while the whole town of Naarden inhabits around 17.000.

Nemorino Mon Jul 16, 2007 10:11 UTC I suppose it's logical that uniformed soldiers would get a 50% discount to the Dutch Museum of Fortifications. Too bad that Comenius museum is such a rip-off. | Jefie Tue Jul 10, 2007 16:12 UTC Glad to see your still climbing every tower that comes your way!! Great pics :o) | breughel Tue Jul 10, 2007 11:23 UTC Quite interesting comments. Was this military architecture influenced by the French military engineer Vauban? | vtveen Mon Jul 9, 2007 16:48 UTC Nice tips and pics about another nice Dutch city. Jaap |
