Temple de la Sagrada Familia: Outside
  • Tip Rating:
  • Barcelona Temple de la Sagrada Familia
  • this little man is actually 5
  • meters tall!
  • by 36waterfalls , 4 more photos

  • This Gaudi masterpiece is overwelming! Mostly on the outside, since the interior is still mainly a building site.
The exterior consists of different areas: the Nativity facade, the Passion facade, the bronze doors, the Cloister. All very rich in detail.
I sat down and looked up for a long time, taking it all in. In awe! Also thinking of the men and woman working here: being on scaffolding 75 meters high ain't for the faint-hearted!

Temple de la Sagrada Familia: Inside
  • Tip Rating:
  • The interior is still under construction. It is impressive when you have a good look though. There is an overview of types of stone used for the pillars, which made me appreciate the structure even more. Also an exhibition of some stunning pictures taken by daily crew from all departments. Breathtaking! Then again: they dó have the best views of course!

    Opening times:
    Oct-March 9.00-18.00
    April-Sep 9.00-20.00

    Entrance fee: €8 (incl. Museum)

Combi-ticket Sagrada Familia + Gaudi House Museum Park Guell €9
    (valid for 1 month)

Temple de la Sagrada Familia: Towers
  • Tip Rating:
  • For €2 you can go up into the towers yourself.
A small lift inside the cathedral takes you up to 65 meters, from there you can walk up to 75, then back down to groundfloor (426 steps!).
Great views and good photo opportunities!
Unless you're claustrophobic or suffer from nausea or fear of heights, I recommend this to everyone!

Temple de la Sagrada Familia: Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • Connected to the Cathedral is the Museum of Sagrada Familia, showing in miniature what's happening around it.
It's the history of the cathedral, a good overview on the structure since construction started, and the nerve-centre: the modellers' workshop: the staff who puts all art and design into action.
A very good display of the whole process. Don't miss it!

Opening times: same as the Sagrada Familia
    Entrance fee: included in cathedral-ticket

    Hospital Sant Pau: Still Operating
  • Tip Rating:
  • From La Sagrada Familia it's a leisurely 10 minutes walk uphill to this beautiful hospital. Just follow Av. de Gaudi, which is also good for a coffee or lunchbreak, since this Av. is lined with bars and restaurants, some with outside seating.

The hospital is an incredible structure by architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner, founded in 1902 and still in full use today. There are a few different buildings on the grounds.
Just follow the green arrows on the road if you'd like to see all the pavilions. The walk takes about 1/2 hour.

This site is also part of the 'Route Modernisme' (see website)
The hospital has an information desk on this inside the mainbuilding.

    Entrance: free
Metro: Line 5 Station: Hospital Sant Pau

Arc de Triumf: Move Over Paris!
  • Tip Rating:
  • I took the metro to Tetuan and walked from there to the Arc and on to Ciutadella Park. A really beautiful walk. Follow Av. Sant Joan which is a broad avenue with some good lunchrooms/restaurants and shops if you like.

Seeing the Arc come into view felt like being on Paris' Champs-Elysees!
What a great work of art.
The frieze was sculpted by Joseph Reynes (1897) and Josep Llimona I Bruguera (1891).

The beauty goes on beyond the Arc. A peaceful stretch of pedestrian road onto Ciutadella Park. One line of beauty, with plenty of benches to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
    So serene, and still Barcelona!

    Parc de la Ciutadella: Entrance
  • Tip Rating:
  • I spent a good hour in this park, wandering around, enjoying nature, art and architecture. I guess you could spend a full day here if you'd also visit the museums and the zoo.
It's all so gorgeous, so tranquil. No traffic, but birdsong instead!
Some wonderful art as well as some amazing trees (yes, TREES!), some heavy with oranges.
This park is definitely a 'must' when visiting Barcelona!

The sculptures near the entrance are
    The Commers and The Industry
by Agapit Vallmitjana I Barbany (1883-1905).

Parc de la Ciutadella: The Cascades
  • Tip Rating:
  • Most impressive and most well known of Ciutadella are of course the cascades.
A work of art mostly by Manel Fuxá and Venanci Vallmitjana I Barbany with help from apprentice Antoni Gaudi! (1880's).

You can take the grand stairs up to the main sculpture and have a good view over the park.

Parc de la Ciutadella: Museu de Zoologia
  • Tip Rating:
  • The park has two museums together forming the "Museu de Ciencles Naturels" ('Natural History Museum').
The first one, Zoology, is right near the entrance in a building called 'Castell dels Tres Dragons' by architect Domenech i Montaner.

    Opening Times:
    Tues-Sun 10.00-14.30
    Thur and Sat 10.00-18.30

    Entrance fee: €3,50
Combi-ticket €5 (also valid for Museum of Geology nextdoor)

Parc de la Ciutadella: Museu de Geologia
  • Tip Rating:
  • The second of the "Museu de Ciencles Naturels" is the nextdoor Museum for Geology. Nature's wonders and fossils start right by the entrance to the building, with some impressive pieces of rock.

    Opening times:
    Tues-Sun 10.00-14.30
    Thurs and Sat 10.00-18.30

    Entrance fee €3,50

Really good tips and pics!! I've to check some places I've not been yet :) Just a small correction: the names of the museums are zoologia/geologia (without the 'c') . Hugs from Barcelona, Isa
