We've been preparing for this trip for about a year. We have our annual summer getaway with friends and we decided last year while we were in Dumaguete that we will be going to El Nido this year. Our main requirements are good beach and good snorkeling since all of us have our own snorkeling gear (snorkel, mask, vest, shoes). So we made estimates on how much we will be spending and came up with a figure (24k). What we did was save up for it by paying 2k per month. I was the designated treasurer :)
So off we went to El Nido last April 23-27. Wow, it was simply our best outing to date. And this is our 5th one already! Again, it was pure relaxation and enjoyment at a very affordable price! We actually spent only about 22k+ (US$540) each and we ate all what we wanted, had 2 bottles of wine and even had exclusive tours (just for our group).
I know the most popular places here are Lagen and Miniloc Resorts and I'm sure it's great to stay there. But they charge a leg and arm for a night! The cheapest for twin sharing is P10,000 per night! So if we went here, our trip would have cost us around P51k (US$1215).
The only thing we missed on our 'cheap' trip is their accommodation and facilities. I guess their food is better too but we were quite happy with what we ate :) For our tours, Sea Slug owner, Rey Arante, took very good care of us. He personally accompanied us. He even had a couple of assistants (Teng and Nolan) and they provided 5-star service to all 4 of us.
We took Sea Air instead of van via Puerto Princesa to maximize the time. And we're sure glad we did that. There was a couple that we met there who took the bus and got stranded for 4 hours on the road!
Anyway, here's a summary of costing (5D/4N = 4 pax)
Sea Air Airfare : 12,560 each
Terminal Fee: 200 (MNL) + 120 (ELNO)
Accommodation: 3,200 each
Tour A (with Art Cafe, joined by 2 other guests) 700 each (with tip)
Tour B (with Sea Slugs, exclusive, wd kayak) 1350 each (with big tip)
Tour C (with Sea Slugs, exclusive) 1130 each (with big tip)
Cliff climbing (private guide) 170 each (with tip)
Food & Drinks: 3,200 each
Total is about P22,780 each. So we even had left over for a dinner in Makati :)
But for those who are looking to do a cheaper trip, you can take the bus, which will bring down your transpo cost. If there's 8 of you, the tours B & C will only cost half bringing down your total cost to just about P15,000. If you want to be more comfortable in a private van, total cost will probably be about P16,500.
There are so many unique things about El Nido. See the pix? That's the terminal. These are guests who just got off the plane or waiting for their plane :) Sit on the bench below the shady trees or just laze away on the hammock while waiting for your ride...
Of course, the best thing about El Nido are the pristine beach (which you can find in almost all the islands) beneath the towering limestone cliffs. If you are after solitude and want to get away from the madding crowd, this is perfect for you. But if you are a party person, then bring your own crowd and have your very own beach party in a secluded island!
And the people here are all so nice and friendly. There is no such word as "No". Somehow they will find a way to provide what you need or what you're requesting. I never wanted to leave!
- Pros:Great secluded beaches, amazing limestone cliffs!
- Cons:Far and hard to get to
- In a nutshell:Paradise Discovered!
Again, we also didn't stay here but our boat just passed by the island and the resort. It's a little cheaper than Lagen... more travel advice
I guess the only problem we had with El Nido is the jelly fish issue. I guess it was probably jellyfish season because... more travel advice
