Buy my house! - Cumbria
Buy my house!

Like Ulverston? Thinking of moving there? Just make an offer, lovely location, lots of light and space. I won't be going back so I don't need it any more.

Market Street, Ulverston - Cumbria

Market Street, Ulverston

Thursday - Ulverston Market Day

Ulverston market days are Thurday and Saturday. Thursday is the better day, with more stalls and greater variety of produce. There is also a monthly Farmers Market on a Saturday, but I haven't seen it for a while.

Even if you don't want to buy anything, its a pleasant way to spend a sunny morning (many stalls begin packing up by 3pm). Stalls are erected on Market Street, New Market Street, and Brogden Street, with the indoor market a pemanant feature in the centre of those streets.

If you are shopping for fresh fish (my favourite!), you'll find queues at George Wilson's fish van outside Woolworths from 7am onwards. It's one of the few local sources for quality and variety, which is sad and surprising considering the Furness Peninsula is surrounded by sea! If buying fresh fish while you're on holiday isn't an option, The Farmers Arms is just across the road, providing the best selection of fish meals in the area.

Address: Ulverston town centre

Directions: Hard to miss if you arrive by car or coach as it spans the town centre.

Hoad Monument, taken from Church Walk - Cumbria

Hoad Monument, taken from Church Walk

Climb Hoad

When in Ulverston, climbing Hoad Hill is a must. The panoramic views over the town are lovely on a sunny day. Morecambe Bay, The Lake District, and the Furness Peninsula are all visible in good weather (as is Glaxo, but you can ignore that!)

It's traditional to climb Hoad in the snow, to sledge down some of the easier slopes, and at Easter, to roll eggs. The only time when it's not a good idea is in a strong wind; you'll find it twice as cold and the wind much more powerful at the top.

If you're reasonably fit, it's easy to follow the signs from Hart Street, or pass by St. Mary's Church on Church Walk, past St. Mary's Hospice to take the main route to the top of the hill. However, if you are less fit (or hungover), try going the back way. Head up Soutergate past the Kings Arms. Turn right up Chittery Lane until you come to a fork in the path. I think either way leads you there, but take the left path and follow the stiles. You can't go wrong as you just need to keep an eye on the monument and head for it! It is easy walking this way, but you'll still get the same sense of exhilartion at the top.

Don't forget to take your camera!

Address: Hoad Monument, Ulverston

Directions: Visible from anywhere in the town so easy to find. From King Street, turn right (the middle street) at Greatorex newsagents up Church Walk. At the end of the street, pass through St. Mary's Church. The path will lead to Hoad.
