Sad to say I have lived in Adelaide all my life and it is only now that I have taken the time to travel the short distance by ferry to this lovely Island. We won a Travel Auction which gave us 3 nights accommodation in Kingscote which is a lovely quiet town on the northern side of the Island and a place that most people stay and radiate out from. All places of interest are within easy reach and we saw everything within the 4 days we had allocated. Our accommodation in the Island Court Complex was very comfortable with a double bedroom plus lounge come kitchen area and of course separate laundry/bathroom. Reverse cycle airconditioning and electric blankets a must as it got very cold at this time of the year. Kingscote is the first settlement on the island and there were some lovely places to sea. The highlight was the feeding of the pelicans - are they a hungry lot with very bad table manners. Said to be the biggest pelicans in the world with a wingspan of up to 10 feet or 3+ metres. |

| | Remarkable Rocks There is so much to write about but so little room. I had to include Remarkable Rocks as everyone know about this place. It is truly remarkable and I wonder how long before the elements will wear away at these rocks. You can already see the damage in comparison photos. It was a sheer drop down to the sea and a little scary, but with the right footwear quite safe. It was very hard to know what photo to include and mine don't do it justice. I have done one that shows the sheer size of these pieces of granite which have been there for hundreds of years |
| This was a cheeky bugger. |
| | The seal colony There are 2 separate seal colonies on the Island. One at Admirals Arch is the New Zealand fur seals. You cant get that close, but you can certainly smell them so you know when you are near. The second is at Seal Bay and these are the Australian Sea Lions. You can only go onto the beach with a guide and it is well worth it to see these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat. Of course you can't touch, but you can get as close as the sea lions will allow you to. It is hard to imagine they were almost hunted to extinction. There were heaps of pups sitting around in a "nursery" whilst their mothers were out to sea, for up to 3 days at a time obtaining food. The picture I have chosen is of a slightly older pup which was chasing the younger ones all over the beach. He had just come out of the water and was covered in sand....aren't they cute? |
