So this is the first part of the little tourist guide for Swabia. The other parts are: Zwiefalten, Unlingen, yet and more to come.
Swabia is home of lovely little viallages, beautiful nature and magnificient cloisters in South Germany. Obermarchtal is one of those little villages. It is believed to be about 2600 years old. It is near Ulm (~35km). The best way to reach it is by car (travel along the B311, direction of Donaueschingen). This little spot is right on the throughroad to other, more busy spots but it is worth a stop if you like to see baroque cloisters and enjoy some silence. It is also a station of the "Schwaebische Barockstrasse", wich I have mentioned in other posts already. Just get off the main road and drive into the village, you will find the cloister with its twin spires immediately as there are only a few small streets. Park your car at the end of the street in the courtyard. |
| | Silence... The first thing to notice is the silence of the spot. Stroll around between the houses and the cloister itself and enjoy. Beyond the cloister is the river Danube - but much smaller as you may have seen it. It's a few meters below and the sight of it is nice. Mostly, there aren't many people around to disturb you. |
| | Small but beautiful The cloister itself isn't too big, but very nice. It is the only fully preserved baroque cloister facility in Swabia with over 1000 yrs of history. It has been founded in the 7th century. Later on it was assigned to the Premonstratensians (~1171) and then went into the posession of the dynasty of 'Thurn und Taxis' in 1802. |
