'In Ulm, um Ulm und um Ulm herum' I like this city. Maybe it's because I have been born here, maybe it's the fact that I had a great time here - Ulm is a snugly little city where you can feel at home. With ~175.000 inhabitants it isn't too big, but not too small either. It is the birthplace of Albert Einstein and home of the tallest church tower in the world, the Ulmer Muenster. There is this cosy little quarter called 'Fischerviertel' where you can feel like travelling back in time and the Danube, with chilly parks along the riverbanks. Its inhabitants -Swabians- are nice folks, known for their thriftiness and diligence, but tend to be a bit reserved. Nevertheless they like celebrating and during summertime there are lots of 'Fests'. Around Ulm there are many nice things to explore, the 'Blautopf' in Blaubeuren for example - a deep blue font - sort of a mystical place, with an old cloister. Lake Constance also isn't too far, if you're in the mood for some daytrip with 'mediterranean' feeling. During winter, Ulm feels like a fairytale - snow coveres the playfull architecture of the old houses and the city is like a big playground to explore. If you should plan a trip to Ulm, mail me - I'd be glad to give you a few hints. |
