Burgrieden was my home for about 18 yrs before I started to have a look around. It is a small village, located in South-Germany, near Ulm - approx. 100km to Stuttgart and 150km to Munich. It has ~3.700 inhabitants. As name and emblem imply, there used to be a 'Burg', wich means castle, here - unfortunately nowadays there's nothing left of it. Burgrieden was first mentioned in official documents in the year 1275. It's inhabitants are Swabians and propably you would have some difficulties in understanding them even if you speak proper German, as the local accent is a bit different. |
| | Greetings from Burgrieden This postcard shows the village of Burgrieden ~1900 a.d.
Around this time there has been a car-factory in Burgrieden, called 'Steiger Autowerke AG' - this brand was a successful manufacturer of legendary race-cars (like the 'Typ 23', 'Typ35' and 'Typ43'), wich won famous races all over the world in the 1920's and early 30's. The company was liquidated before WW II, due to corruption-affairs. Today only one fully functional car exists. |
| Oberschwaebische Barockstrasse |
| | Idyllic... As Burgrieden is located in the valley of the river 'Rot' , the nature around is lovely - gently rolling hills and deep green woods all around. The 'Oberschwaebische Barockstrasse' is leading through the village. This is a 500km long road-trip, leading to the most beautiful baroque churches and buildings in Swabia and the Allgaeu (main tour starts in Ulm, just follow the yellow putto). Read more on www.barockstrasse.org. A cultural sight is the museum 'Villa Rot' in Rot, part of the borough of Burgrieden. It features artworks of European and Asian/African artists, bringing together the different cultures. The villa/museum itself has been built in 1912 by Raymund von Fugger. It is of beautiful art-nouveau architecture. |
