frankfurt am main has been a trading area since prehistoric times. at frankfurt the main river could be forded which facilitated ancient trade. the romans had a fort here and the franks conquered the area around 500AD. in the 8th century charlemagne held court in frankfurt. between 1562 and 1806 the emperors of the holy roman empire were crowned in frankfurt. during WWII frankfurt was heavily bombed by allied forces which destroyed most of frankfurt's historic buildings. after WWII frankfurt was rebuilt as a american style city. it's skyline is often compared to new york and chicago. since the 1980's there has been a movement to recreate a number of frankfurt's historic buildings and squares. the romerberg is an excellent example of these renovations.
frankfurt is known for it's numerous museums. the schaumainkai along the main river on the sachsenhausen side has a excellent collection of museums. the stadelsches kunstinstitut is one of the best in germany. frankfurt is a interesting place to visit to see old and new germany.
