petersburg is a city located in southeast virginia. the area around petersburg was inhabited by native americans dating back to 6500 BC. when the english arrived in 1607 the appamatuck native american tribe inhabited the petersburg area. in 1646 the virginia colony established fort henry near present day downtown petersburg. in 1733 william byrd II founded petersburg and the town was named after peter jones who had a trading post in present day downtown petersburg. during the revolutionary war the battle of blandford was fought just east of downtown. prior to the civil war the economy of the area was based on tabacco production and petersburg was an important market town and railroad transportation hub. during the civil war petersburg was a important confederate transportation hub and was attacked by the union. the siege of petersburg lasted ten months and was the longest battle in the civil war. after the civil war many freed slaves moved to petersburg from rural plantations and today the city has a majority african-american population. of interest to the tourist is the downtown historic district which has scores of historic and architectually significant homes and buildings. for those interested in civil war history petersburg is home to the petersburg national battlefield. petersburg is a very interesting side trip when traveling on I-95 in southern virginia.

the most significant event in the history of petersburg was the battle of petersburg between the forces of union general ulysses s. grant and the forces of confederate general robert e. lee. the battle of petersburg also known as the siege of petersburg was fought between june 9 th 1864 and march 25 th 1865. petersburg was an important confederate transportation hub and the city protected the southern approach to richmond. the siege ended after the battle of five forks in march 1865. after petersburg fell richmond was quickly occupied by the union. general robert e. lee and his army of northern virginia was forced to retreat to appomattox courthouse where he surrendered his army to general grant. lee's surrender brought about the end of the civil war.
my things to do pages are a virtual tour of downtown petersburg and the petersburg national battlefield.
