the last capital of the confederacy

danville is located in south central virginia near the north carolina border. in 1728 white settlers moved to this location near a ford in the dan river. the settlement was named "wayne's ford" after an early settler. the town was renamed danville in 1793. prior to the civil war danville was a tobacco market town. during the civil war danville was an important confederate rail center and was home to a quartermasters depot, confederate hospital, and a union prison. danville is best known for being the third and last capital of the confederacy. after the fall of richmond confederate president jefferson davis and his cabinet moved to danville on april 3 rd 1865. the new capital was located in the sutherlin mansion. after the surrender of general robert e. lee's army of northern virginia at appomattox president davis and his cabinet left danville for washington georgia. after the civil war danville became a prosperous textile manufacturing town. dan river industries was one of the world's largest textile mills. the dan river mill closed in 2006 which had a negative effect on danville's economy.
of interest to the tourist is the sutherlin mansion and "millionaires row" both located on main street downtown.
