appomattox court house is a small village located three miles east of the town of appomatox on hwy 24. originally the village was named clover hill after the clover hill tavern. the clover hill tavern was built in 1819 and was a stage coach stop on the richmond-lynchburg stage coach line. in 1845 clover hill became the county seat of appomattox county and was renamed appomattox court house. the economy of the village declined when a train depot was built in the town of appomattox in 1854. in 1892 the appomattox court house was destroyed by fire and the county seat was moved to the town of appomattox. the village of appomattox court house is famous for being the surrender site of confederate general robert e. lee's army of northern virginia to union general ulysses s. grant.
