the town of covington is located about 40 miles north of memphis on highway 51 in southwest tennessee. covington is the county seat of tipton county tennessee. the area around covington was first explored by french canadians jacques marquette and louis joliet in 1673. their expedition traveled down the mississippi river from wisconsin to the mouth of the arkansas river. during the 18 th century the area around covington was home to a number of large cotton plantations. during the civil war the union captured nearby fort pillow and covington was occupied by union forces for most of the war. the economy of covington suffered during the era of radical reconstruction but rebounded in the 1870's. the memphis-paducah railroad was built through covington in 1873 and in 1894 electric power was established in the town. in the 1920's US route 51 was built through covington connecting the town by automobile to memphis and chicago.
of interest to the tourist is covington's downtown historic district and the tipton county courthouse. for those interested in civil war history is covington's veterans park which was the site of confederate general nathan bedford forrest's last speech and nearby fort pillow state park.
