marion is located in northeast south carolina between the cities of florence and myrtle beach. marion is the county seat of marion county south carolina. the area around marion was settled by english immigrants in the 1730's. in 1754 john godbold established the first permanent settlement in the future town of marion. in the late 1700's marion was named gilesborough after hugh giles. in 1847 the town was renamed marion after revolutionary war hero francis marion. this charming town has much to offer the tourist. marion has scores of historic homes and buildings and a number of restaurants and bars downtown. for those interested in history and southern culture marion is a very worth while side trip off of I-95 in northeast south carolina
