pictured is the 1940 lexington county courthouse. lexington is the county seat of lexington county south carolina. lexington was first established in 1735 by king george II. the area around present day lexington was called saxe gotha to honor the marriage of the british prince of wales to princess augusta of germany. downtown lexington was situated on the occaneechi indian trail which today is highway US 1. lexington was settled by german and swiss immigrants. during the revolutionary war the battle of tarrar springs was fought near lexington. in 1785 lexington was renamed after the revolutionary war battle in lexington mass. prior to the civil war lexington's economy was based on cotton, corn, sweet potatoe cultivation. in 1865 the town was destroyed by union general w.t. sherman. today lexington is a suburb of columbia and is best known for it's beautiful 50,000 acre lake murray. lexington has several good restaurants and a very interesting historical museum.
