abbeville

abbeville is located in west central south carolina about half way between anderson south carolina and augusta georgia. abbeville was established by french hugenots in 1764 and is named after abbeville france. abbeville is best known as the "birthplace and deathbed of the confederacy". on november 22 nd 1860 a meeting was held in abbeville to launch south carolina's sucession from the union. near the end of the civil war confederate president jefferson davis traveled from danville virginia to abbeville. in abbeville davis visited his friend armistead burt. according to some on may 2 nd 1865 at the burt-stark mansion davis offically acknowledged the dissolution of the confederacy. others believe that the confederacy was dissolved at the heard house in washington georgia on may 5 th 1865. abbeville is the birthplace of john c. calhoun andrew jackson's vice president. of interest to the tourist is abbeville's downtown historic district and courthouse square that offers a nice selection of shops and restaurants. for those interested in architecture and american history abbeville is an interesting "off the beaten path" place to visit in west central south carolina.
