pineville

pineville is a small town in south mecklenburg county south of charlotte near the north carolina/south carolina border. pineville was originally called morrow's turnout. located at the intersection of two major indian trading routes, it had vast meadows in which animals of trade and transportation could be "turned-out" to pasture. in 1852 the charlotte and columbia railroad passed through morrow's turnout and the town's name was changed to pineville. pineville was incorporated in 1873. in the 1890's dover yarn mills established a cotton mill in pineville. the mill later became cone mills inc. which operated in the town until the 1970's. located near interstate I-485 pineville is now known for it's shopping centers and strip malls near the interstate. of interest to the tourist is pineviile's downtown historic district and the site of u.s. president james k. polk's birthplace.
