chimney rock

the village of chimney rock is located on US 64 between rutherfordton and asheville in western north carolina. the area around chimney rock was originally inhabited by the catawba native american tribe and then the cherokees. the village of chimney rock is in hickory nut gorge and native americans avoided the gorge because they thought that the gorge was inhabited by "little people" and evil spirits. in the early 1800's with the arrival of white settlers hickory nut gorge became an important trade route between south carolina and tennessee. in the 1830's a stage coach carried passengers between rutherfordton and asheville. when the broad river was dammed in 1925 creating lake lure the hickory nut gorge area became a tourist attraction. of interest to the tourist is chimney rock state park, chimney rock village shopping and dining, and near by lake lure. the chimney rock area is a very nice place to visit in western north carolina.

My step-mother had a cabin near Chimney Rock, I went there about 35 years ago. Thanks for the memories.
