bat cave is a tiny unincorportated village on US 64 in hickory nut gorge near the town of lake lure. bat cave is located on the rocky broad river and is named after a large cave nearby. bat cave is 300 feet long and 85 feet high and is the largest granite fissure cave in north america. bat cave is home to thousands of bats. bat cave is only open for tours between mid april and mid august. for tour information see www.nature.org/ and search "bat cave". sadly much of the village of bat cave is now a "ghost" town. much of the village was damaged in the mid 1990's by a flood. many of the businesses in bat cave never reopened after the flood. of interest to the tourist is the old cider mill and the wild and scenic rocky broad river. bat cave is worth a quick stop when in the chimney rock-lake lure area.
