grenada

the town of grenada is located in north central mississippi just off of I-55. grenada is the county seat of grenada county mississippi. in the 1830's the town of pittsburg and the town of tulahoma were established by franklyn plummer and hiram runnels. later the two towns were combined to form grenada. grenada is located on the yalobusha line that was originally surveyed on orders by andrew jackson. this line became an important defensive position for the confederates during the civil war. in december 1862 general earl van dorn used grenada as his base for his famous raid on general grant's supply depot in holly springs mississippi. van dorn's victory in holly springs saved grenada from union attack. in modern times martin luther king visited grenada in the 1960's to register black voters.
for those interested in civil war history and antebellum architecture grenada has several civil war sites and an excellent collection of pre civil war era homes. grenada is a very worth while side trip when traveling on I-55 in north central mississippi.
