home of angola state prison

the tiny town of tunica is known as the home of the louisiana state penitentiary or more commonly known as angola. the prison covers 18,000 acres which was once the angola plantation. in 1830 isaac franklin, a wealthy slave trader established a plantation on this site and named it after a area in africa were slaves came from. in 1901 the state of louisiana turned the property into a prison and work farm. angola for decades was famous for prisoner abuse and harsh working conditions. in 1972 elayne hunt was appointed warden with the mandate to clean up angola. since then prison conditions at angola are now more consistent with other state prisons around the county. several hollywood movies have been filmed at angola including "dead man walking", "the farm", and "monster's ball". also the movie "the green mile" was inspired by angola. of interest to the tourist is the very interesting louisiana state penitentiary museum located at the main entrance to the prison.
