millen

millen is the county seat of jenkins county georgia. this small town is located at the intersection of US25 and GA17 in east central georgia. the town was originally called millen's junction and was named after mc pherson millen. during the civil war fort lawton was built near millen which was the confederacy's largest union prisoner of war camp. of interest to the tourist is millen's downtown historic district and near by magnolia springs state park.

this most significant historic event in the history of millen was the burning of the town in november 1964. general william t sherman passed through millen's junction on his infamous march to the sea after the burning of atlanta. sherman's troops found the abandoned confederate prisoner of war camp fort lawton near millen's junction and sherman decided to burn the town. millen was rebuilt after the civil war and the town of millen was incorporated in 1881.
