lumpkin is the county seat of stewart county georgia and is named after georgia politician wilson lumpkin. lumpkin was incorporated in 1829 and was a small southwest georgia frontier town. this small town has a number of attactions for the tourist. seven miles west of lumpkin is providence canyon state park and in downtown lumpkin is historic westville village. on courthouse square downtown there are two interesting museums. for those interested in nature, history, and southern culture lumpkin is a very interesting place to visit when in southwest georgia.

wilson lumpkin (1783-1870) was a famous georgia politician. lumpkin served in the georgia house of representatives from 1804 to 1812 and was elected to the u.s. house of representatives in 1815. lumpkin was the governor of georgia from 1831 to 1835 and was a u.s. senator from 1837 to 1841. lumpkin was also an indian affairs commissioner and supported the removal of native americans from the state of georgia.

    The Stewart county courthouse and jail buildings are so charming. I have research my ancestry and my GGGrandmother's family was from Lumpkin. Lovely page of a lovely community.
